According to the Chinese-language newspaper Wall Street Journal, on 6 January, the electronic currency fell madly when the renminbi was strong. Bitcoin fell by more than 20 per cent in a few hours after some trading platforms approached a new record, and then recovered some of the falls in the United States in the morning, at about $977 (US$ 1 = RMB 6.89 — this net).

Fear of real surveillance of funds had led to a recent acceleration in the appreciation of Bitcoin, which had been accompanied by new measures in Beijing.
