PANews reported on 18 January that, according to CoinDesk, the annual report by Chainalysis on the trend in encryption crime estimated that illegal addresses received over $24 billion in encrypted currency in 2023, accounting for 0.34 per cent of all transactions. This figure was nearly 40 per cent lower than in 2022, but it is still provisional. The total is currently $24.2 billion, which may increase as more addresses are deemed illegal. The total is now $39.6 billion in 2022, but only $20.6 billion was confirmed by Chainalysis when he reported last year.
The report also states that 61.5% of the total volume of transactions for sanctioned entities took place in 2023. Steady currency continued to account for the majority of illegal transactions in 2023, after Bitcoins were the first encrypted currency for criminals between 2018 and 2021.
